Ocean Shipping Reporter

FreightWaves, the top-read supply chain publication in the U.S., is hiring a reporter to cover ocean trade. The oceans reporter will specialize in containerized ocean trade, an industry that touches nearly every part of the economy. The past year has seen major disruption to ocean trade, with major retailers and manufacturers struggling to secure space to move key products. The result has been unprecedented supply chain chaos for consumers as well as historic profits for the largely consolidated ocean carrier space. 

The oceans reporter will have experience covering trade and the global economy, preferably maritime commerce. They will spot developing news in containerized ocean shipping, land market-moving scoops and contribute key analysis for the FreightWaves written platform. The ideal candidate is a data enthusiast who would enjoy working with our team of in-house ocean experts. They will be asked to speak on our industry-leading television programs and podcasts. And they will have a passion for unearthing surprising details about ocean shipping and explaining them to our audience of millions.

They will collaborate with others on the team, including our maritime reporter, who specializes in tanker and bulk shipping, and our trade reporter, who specializes in air cargo.

***The job is remote, with an option to work out of our Chattanooga, Tennessee, office.

What you will be doing:

• Write news, scoops and analysis on container ocean shipping 
• Delve into data 
• Explain meaty concepts to an audience of industry insiders and curious business readers
• Take stances that challenge traditional industry thinking to unearth truths about our global economy
• Open to travel to container shipping hubs like China, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark 
• Be available to work on-call and evenings

What you bring to the table:

• At least 5 years of business, economics or trade reporting experience
• Experience in maritime trade strongly preferred 
• A track record of delivering market-moving news and cultivating networks of sources
• Familiarity with WordPress and SEO
